Ogun Government Mandates New Selection for Awujale Stool Amid Traditional Disputes

In a decisive intervention to resolve longstanding chieftaincy tensions in Ijebu-Ode, the Ogun State Government has ordered a fresh selection process for the revered Awujale stool, one of the most prestigious traditional thrones in Yorubaland. The directive, issued on Thursday, December 18, 2025, by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Adedapo Oluwoye, aims to ensure transparency and adherence to customary laws following complaints of irregularities in the previous process.

The Awujale stool, vacant since the passing of the late Oba (Sir) Sikiru Kayode Adetona in 2023, has been at the center of a protracted dispute involving ruling families and kingmakers in Ijebuland. The government’s decision comes after a review panel, constituted under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration, identified procedural lapses, including non-compliance with the chieftaincy declaration and exclusion of eligible contenders from the Ladoke-Akintola ruling house. “We are committed to upholding the traditions while promoting peace and unity in Ijebu-Ode,” Oluwoye stated during a press briefing in Abeokuta. “The new process will involve all stakeholders to select a worthy successor who embodies the stool’s legacy of wisdom and progress.”

The order has elicited mixed reactions. The Ijebu-Ode Traditional Council welcomed the move as a step toward resolution, but some aspirants accused the government of political interference. Prince (Dr.) Shadrach Adetona, a prominent contender, expressed optimism: “This fresh start honors our customs and ensures the Awujale’s throne goes to the most deserving.” The process is slated to commence within 30 days, with the Bureau for Local Government Affairs overseeing nominations and screenings.

This development underscores Ogun State’s ongoing efforts to mediate traditional conflicts, particularly in historic kingdoms like Ijebu, where the Awujale wields significant cultural and economic influence. As the selection unfolds, stakeholders urge all parties to prioritize harmony to avoid escalating tensions in the region.
