Following the passing of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the revered Olubadan of Ibadanland, attention has shifted to the traditional succession line, where former Oyo State Governor, Senator Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, emerges as the next in line for the ancient and prestigious throne.

As tradition dictates, the Olubadan ascension follows a well-structured and hierarchical system, unique to Ibadanland, which alternates between the two ruling lines: the Otun line and the Balogun line. Senator Ladoja currently holds the title of Otun Olubadan — the most senior chief in the Otun line — positioning him as the rightful heir to the throne.
A respected statesman and a political heavyweight in Nigeria, Ladoja is widely seen as a leader with deep roots in Ibadan’s cultural heritage, an understanding of traditional leadership, and a lifelong commitment to the progress of the city. His potential ascension has sparked widespread optimism among many indigenes who view him as a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Many within the Ibadan traditional council and across the sociopolitical space have expressed confidence in Ladoja’s leadership qualities, noting that his vast experience in governance, public service, and business places him in a strong position to uphold the legacy of peace, development, and unity set by his predecessors.
The formal processes leading to his coronation are expected to commence in line with customs and protocols of the Olubadan-in-Council. If all goes as anticipated, Ibadanland may soon witness a historic transition, welcoming Senator Ladoja as the next Olubadan — a development that would mark a significant chapter in the city’s rich traditional history.
