Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Move Against Governor Fubara, Urges Stability and Democratic Order

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the ongoing impeachment process initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the move as destabilising and unnecessary.

In an official statement signed by party spokesperson Darlington Nwauju, the APC acknowledged the constitutional independence of the legislature but said pursuing impeachment at this stage could undermine democratic stability in the state and damage the party’s reputation. The statement said the party had noted the “unfortunate developments” from the assembly and warned against allowing internal rivalries to escalate into political crisis.

The APC pointed out that the impeachment effort appears linked to budgetary matters, noting that a ₦1.485 trillion budget transmitted during the period of emergency rule in Rivers State had been approved by the National Assembly for use until August 2026 — and that the constitution permits a governor to continue spending for up to six months into a new fiscal year. Based on this, the party argued there was no valid ground for impeachment related to budget issues alone.

The party urged its lawmakers in the assembly to resist external pressures and discontinue the impeachment process, warning that continued pursuit could stall development efforts and drag the APC’s image “into the mud.” It also called for political actors to uphold democratic principles and allow governance, rather than partisan rivalries, to prevail.

The debate over Governor Fubara’s impeachment has drawn mixed reactions from various political groups and civil society voices, but the APC’s intervention highlights concerns about the potential effects of the move on the state’s stability and governance.
