Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially inaugurated the Oyo State Council of Obas in an event held in Ibadan, marking a new phase in the administration of the state’s traditional institutions.

At the ceremony, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, was sworn in as the pioneer chairman of the newly constituted council. Under the recent legal changes, the chairmanship of the council is structured on a rotational leadership system, designed to give all first-class traditional rulers an opportunity to lead the council.

Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of equity, inclusivity, unity, and harmony among the traditional rulers across Oyo State. He highlighted the role of monarchs as crucial partners in grassroots governance, conflict resolution, cultural preservation, and community development.

Despite being one of the state’s most senior traditional figures, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, was noticeably absent from the inauguration, and no official reason was provided for his nonattendance.

The inauguration follows the passage of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs (Further Amendments) Bill, 2025, which introduced the rotational leadership arrangement and aims to ensure balanced representation and cooperation among the state’s traditional institutions.
