In a significant move to enhance healthcare accessibility, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a substantial subsidy on kidney dialysis treatments across federal public hospitals. This initiative reduces the cost of each dialysis session from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000, marking a 76% decrease aimed at alleviating the financial burden on patients with kidney-related ailments.

Presidential spokesperson Daniel Bwala announced the development on Monday, stating that the subsidy will initially be implemented in ten selected federal hospitals, with plans to expand to more medical centers and teaching hospitals nationwide by the end of the year.
This policy is part of President Tinubu’s broader efforts to improve healthcare services in Nigeria. Last year, he approved free cesarean sections for pregnant women in federal hospitals, aiming to reduce maternal mortality rates.
Healthcare professionals have lauded the subsidy, noting its potential to significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce the incidence of untreated kidney diseases due to financial constraints
The federal government plans to monitor the program’s implementation closely and ensure that the subsidized services are delivered efficiently and equitably across all participating institutions.
This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to making essential healthcare services more affordable and accessible to all Nigerians.
